Excellent Tea for a Wide Harvest

What Kind of Infuser Is Best for Loose Leaf Tea?

Choose an infuser with enough room for the leaves to open, a mesh fine enough to contain the leaf, and a shape that is easy to remove and clean. A simple basket works for most cups.

Room matters more than complexity

Tea leaves expand as they absorb water. A tiny novelty ball can crowd them, particularly a larger rolled or whole-leaf tea. A basket that fills much of the mug gives the leaf more contact with water and makes measuring easier.

For very fine tea, choose a finer mesh. For large leaves, a teapot with a removable strainer may be pleasant. Neither option requires expensive equipment.

Make cleanup part of the choice

The best infuser is one you will use. Check that it fits your favorite mug, can be lifted without dripping everywhere, and is simple to rinse. Some baskets have a lid that becomes a rest after steeping.

If a cup tastes weak despite a generous measure, try a larger infuser before adding more tea. The leaves may simply need space.
