Decaf Tea vs Caffeine-Free Tea: What Is the Difference?

Decaffeinated tea starts as true tea and has much of its caffeine removed. A naturally caffeine-free infusion contains no tea leaf to begin with, unless the blend adds one.

Two routes to a lower-caffeine cup

A decaf black tea can preserve some of the character of a familiar black-tea cup, though its flavor may differ from the regular version. “Decaf” does not necessarily mean absolutely zero caffeine.

Chamomile, peppermint, and many fruit infusions are naturally caffeine-free when made without Camellia sinensis. The UK Tea & Infusions Association notes this distinction in its guidance on infusions.

Look beyond the front label

A product called “herbal tea” may contain multiple botanicals. A product called “sleep tea” may make an impression that goes beyond what evidence supports. Read the actual ingredients and caffeine information, especially if you are choosing for a specific sensitivity.

For flavor, compare a decaf tea with an infusion plain before adding milk or sweetener. The better evening cup is the one you enjoy and can choose with confidence.
