How Do You Choose Your First Loose Leaf Tea?
Start with the flavors you already like, then choose one clear comparison: black or green, plain or flavored, brisk or gentle. A simple tasting teaches more than a long shopping list.

Begin with a familiar preference
If you like a strong breakfast cup with milk, begin with a fuller black tea. If you want a lighter, grassy or savory drink, try green tea. If floral aroma appeals to you, a scented jasmine tea may be a natural first step.
Read the actual ingredients. “Tea” can mean Camellia sinensis, while an herbal infusion may contain no tea leaf at all. That matters if you are trying to manage caffeine.
Buy for a real routine
Ask when you will drink it, what equipment you have, and whether you want to brew for one person or several. A tea you make happily three mornings a week is a better first choice than an impressive tea you never open.
Taste your first cup plain, then adjust leaf, time, or temperature one at a time. Keep a note of what changed. Your preferences, not a category ranking, should guide the next tea you try.
