Tea and hospitality
What Is Hibiscus Tea?
Hibiscus tea is usually a tart, ruby-colored herbal infusion made from hibiscus calyces. It contains no tea leaf unless a blend adds Camellia sinensis.

A different kind of bright cup
Hibiscus is known for vivid color and a tangy flavor that can stand up to ice or fruit. It is an infusion rather than a black or green tea. A blueberry-hibiscus blend, for example, may emphasize fruit character while keeping that tart floral base.
The word “hibiscus” on a product name does not tell you every ingredient. Read the list for added tea leaf, sweeteners, or other botanicals.
Balance the tartness
Start with the producer’s steeping direction, then taste before sweetening. If the cup is more tart than you want, dilute slightly or serve over ice; if it is too light, adjust the amount of dried ingredient next time.
A clear glass can show the color beautifully when serving guests. Color alone, however, does not tell you the strength, sweetness, or final flavor of a blend.
